Tomorrow afternoon, Willen de Kooning Academie and CBK Rotterdam organize information sessions about the art practice of visual artists. Artists who have been involved in a reserach project recently will share their information and discuss with the public. CBK Rotterdam Art Office will tell more about their role for Rotterdam based visual artists. We will end with talks and drinks, where you can informally talk to people working in the field, a.o. Francine Mendelaar of Fonds Kwadraat.
Rotterdam based visual artists and students of the WdKA are very welcome to this afternoon!
There are still some places available!

What does it mean to set up an artistic research practice? How do you make sure it can be developed sustainably? Which partners to involve in your research? How to be visible? What are the ways to finance the project? An artistic research starts with asking the right questions.

For his event artists and designers have been invited to talk about the research projects they have conducted over the last year. From different angles they question their own practice and the world surrounding them. In concentrated, short artist sessions they present their research: the results, what went wrong and what went right. In conversations the artists will answer questions and share their experiences.
This afternoon has been made possible in collaboration with CBK Rotterdam. The CBK Research and Development grant (O&O regeling) provides financial support for artistic research projects. Petra Laaper will be present to give more information about this and other financing possibilities.
Curious Autonomy is the first event in a series of THE AUTONOMOUS FABRIC, a research project initiated from the Autonomous Practices of Willem de Kooning Academy Rotterdam. THE AUTONOMOUS FABRIC questions autonomy in relation to present-day developments in society. Changing ways of how we deal with labour, demands new definitions of the autonomous maker, who’s able to take a critical stand in the world.
With: Melle Smets, Amy Wu, Sol Archer, Johan Kleinjan, Ivan Henriques.
On arrival you apply for two artist sessions. See below for more information about these artists.

PARTICIPANTS:
Melle Smets (NL)
Melle Smets and sociologist Joost van Onna followed the trail of discarded cars and ended up in Ghana, where they get disassembled. Out of the separate car parts and in collaboration with the local community they built a new car, the Turtle 1, and exported it back to Europe.
Melle Smets works as an artist/designer. For this project he received financial support from CBK Rotterdam (O&O)
Amy Wu (AUS)
Amy Wu explores how analogue forms of steganography, namely invisible ink, could be a possible solution to more secure communication in the age of pervasive online surveillance.
Amy Wu teaches in the minor Hacking of the WdKA. For this project she received financial support from CBK Rotterdam (O&O).
Sol Archer (UK)
Sol Archer focused his research on the Maasvlakte in the Rotterdam harbor. The harbor labour is taken over by machines, which will result in significant loss of jobs. By combining historical documents, personal interviews and field recordings Sol Archer tells the story of how automated processes influence the lives of people.
Sol Archer graduated from the Piet Zwart Institute MA Fine Arts in 2015. For his research project he received support by Fonds Kwadraat.
Johan Kleinjan (NL)
Johan Kleinjan is an autonomous illustrator. He traveled to Taipei, Taiwan, for two months to do research on the local mid-rise architecture, in order to find new ways of depicting the buildings and their surroundings.
In 2000 Johan Kleinjan graduated from the Illustration department of the WdKA. He received financial support from CBK Rotterdam (O&O) for this project.
Ivan Henriques (BRA)
Ivan Henriques focuses on the relationship between the environment and sustainability, from the urgency of the pollution of rivers, bays and ponds. Ivan collaborates with scientists and engineers to develop an interactive artwork that invites the audience to water bike and contribute to our habitat.
Ivan Henriques is the current Artist in Residence at the Willem de Kooning Academy. He received funding by the Creative Industries Fund.
